Yesterday you saw a great example - IN A VIDEO ON THE GOLF COURSE - of what 'Consistent' really means in Golf.
(If you missed it, just scroll down to yesterday's Post, just underneath this one.)
So, now, let's assume you agree with me that you already are, to some degree, 'Consistent' in your Golf Game. I know that may be hard for you to agree with, and understand, but the following thoughts
Since you are consistent, to some degree, now you have asked the logically 'Good Question'...
'How Can I Get Even More Consistent?'
Two Steps: 1 - OPEN YOUR EYES and 2 - OPEN YOUR MIND
1 - OPEN YOUR EYES
I remember playing with the Hall-Of-Famer - that I described to you day the before yesterday. She literally had me OPEN MY EYES to see what I never had seen before. As I watched golf shots, I never saw what she saw, until then.
When she saw a ball-flight that did not quite turn the exact way she wanted - she saw a 'good-miss' - that would not change her score one iota. She enjoyed what she just saw.
Up until then - when I saw a ball-flight that did not quite turn the exact way I wanted - I saw a 'bad-swing' that immediately caused me to: question myself, think of critiques Ken Venturi would utter, and think of the miserable bogey or double I would probably make on this hole because of my failure. I hated what I just saw.
OPEN YOUR EYES. Look closely at the golf shots you hit. Are they really that bad? I know they are sometimes. Believe me, I know. I've watched hundreds of thousands of golf shots in 20+ years of Full-Time golf teaching . If you are like the golfers I've known over those years, though, your shots are really not as far away from your target as you might think.
Use this simple definition for your Full Swing Golf Shots...as you OPEN YOUR EYES.
For a DRIVE, it can only be one of two things. That DRIVE will either be In-Play or Out-Of-Play.
In-Play means; you have an unobstructed swing and view of the Green to get home in regulation and no penalty shot. Out-Of-Play means you can't get home in regulation, without having to hit a miracle Golf Shot around or over a tree or something.
For an APPROACH, you also have only two options. The APPROACH will either leave you a PUTT/CHIP or a PITCH.
PUTT or CHIP as a result of your APPROACH means; you should be able to get down in just two more Golf Shots at worst. PITCH as a result of your APPROACH means; you will most likely take three more Golf Shots to get it in the hole.
SEE your Golf Shots this way, and you will become more 'Consistent'.
'Consistent' Golf starts with 'Consistent' SEEING and thinking.
2 - OPEN YOUR MIND
You've already done it!!! Simply by reading this far, you've already tried to change your mind about your Golf Shots and Golf Game.
You can try this new thinking the very next time you go to practice...or even better, practice by yourself on the course.
OPEN YOUR EYES as you hit several APPROACH shots into a green and notice how many leave a PUTT/CHIP or PITCH. Do the same thing with a DRIVE. OPEN YOUR EYES and see how many are In-Play or Out-Of-Play.
'How Do I Become Even More Consistent?' Now you know how to start.
We'll talk more tomorrow about these attributes of 'Good Eyes' and 'Good Mind' in Golf.
SEE you then. Watch the Video from yesterday as you mull over these ideas.
