Television Golf can help your Golf game. I’m afraid, though, it usually does much more harm than good.
My family has watched the vast majority of tournaments over the last 10 years with no audio.
Try to remember that the commentators’ job is to keep you in suspense so you will stay tuned and increase their Nielsen ratings. Their motivation increases the entertainment value for you – but it hurts your Golf Game.
They make every shot seem ‘critical’. Each shot also becomes very...
You get the idea.
If you think like that as you play golf – if the Players actually thought like that – man, I think you’d have a nervous breakdown most rounds by the middle of your back 9. At least you’ll be very anxious and nervous on every shot.
Oh, that does describe you, eh?
Another way, besides turning off the audio, to actually benefit your Golf Game while you watch the SBS Championship in a week or two, as well as the Sony Open the following weekend – is to realize that the difference between a good round and poor round is often just a few shots for these PGA Tour Players.
They will almost always shoot between 67 and 73. Watch carefully and try to ascertain exactly what will make the difference for them that day. It will be a great golf learning exercise for you. It will improve your Observational Skills. When you see a Player have one bad hole on Thursday or Friday, then maybe finish 3 strokes out of the Sunday playoff, remember that.
Then when you play this Summer, notice what causes your ‘big’ holes. It will probably be the same mistake that PGA Tour Player made.
Also, notice how the PGA Tour Players avoid ‘big’ holes. They rarely give up on a hole or series of shots.
Also, notice how on each hole, the PGA Tour Players will all tend to ‘miss’ the Drive or Approach shot in the same place. They know that if they do not hit their exact target, they want to leave the easiest shot possible for their next one.
Do these three things when you watch the PGA Tour Players the next couple weeks – and then TV golf will really benefit you and your Golf Game.
