Cincinnati Family Golf Tour - Sharon Woods Family Scramble - Results

The second event in Cincinnati's Hamilton County Park District 'Family Golf Tour' enjoyed a beautiful spring evening at one of Cincinnati's best locations, Sharon Woods Golf Course.

I enjoyed helping the Family Golfers 'See Their Swing' next to a PGA/LPGA Tour Player on the porch next to the 9th Green.  This is an example of how much you can improve very quickly.

Cincinnati Family Golf Tour - Results, Family Scramble at Meadow Links & Golf Academy

Cincinnati Golfers participating in the 2010 Golf Season's first Family Golf Tour event, the Family Scramble at Meadow Links & Golf Academy were treated to a pleasant Spring morning of Golf and Fun.

These Cincinnati Golfers also got to 'See Their Golf Swing' on the Golf Industry's Best Golf Swing Analysis Equipment....hope you can join us at Sharon Woods...I'll be playing with my Family Team again...and allowing you to 'See Your Golf Swing' as these Players did after your round.

 
The next Family Golf Tour event happens Sunday evening May 30th at Sharon Woods Golf Course with Tee-Times beginning around 4pm.  The Format is another 9-Hole Family Scramble.  This is the perfect Golf Format for you to invite non-golfing Family Members or very young Family Members who have not played golf at all or very little  - to enjoy some time on the Golf Course with you - at a very low-cost.

Cincinnati Family Golf Tour, Family Scramble - Sunday May 16 at Meadow Links & Golf Academy - Register Today

The Family Scramble at Meadow Links & Golf Academy (9-holes) happens Sunday morning and noon-time on Sunday May 16th.  This is the first of 6 events in the newly-formed Hamilton County Park District Family Golf Tour .

This is Cincinnati's (and, as far as we know, the nation's) first Golf Tour to allow Families to play and compete TOGETHER!

Y’know how you will hear golfers talk about how bad they played - and then describe a bunch of excuses (reasons) for their bad round?

Also, you've probably heard golfers describe how bad they are, after they have played a good round, as if they are apologizing for their good play.

I've been guilty of this.  You probably have, too.

It's like politics or something.  There are the 'facts' - then the 'spin'.

When I first became a PGA Apprentice Golf Pro in 1987 at the old Winton Woods Golf Course in Cincinnati, we did not have a Driving Range.  Therefore, to practice, I'd play 9 or 18 at the crack of dawn really fast, before my work shift started.

Invariably, as I was working that day in the Pro Shop, golfers who had seen me on the course would ask, "How'd Ya' Play, Pro?"

As the months passed, I noticed something very telling about my answers.  When I

21 Golf ?s Of Christmas - SAQ - 'What Can I Do Indoors To Improve My Golf Game?'

I remember reading Jack Nicklaus' autobiography, Golf My Way.

I read it over and over again.  I read it in the Billings, Montana Public Library, in the dead of Winter during my Junior and Senior years of High School.  Of course, I had plenty of time to dream about warm Summer days, cooped up in that Library cubicle, with snow swirling outside the window.

My dad said they only had 3 seasons out there: July, August and Winter.  He was not far off.

Today's SAQ, Should've Asked Question, is a rarely asked question.  But when you understand its answer you will really enjoy seeing lower scores.  Your depth of knowledge about Golf in general, and your Golf Game in particular, will be greatly expanded.

In addition to reading golf instructional books, golf biographies seem to fit especially well into a Winter golf schedule. It's like you 'get to know' the person over the Winter, when you can't really try the things the instructional books prescribe.

Bobby Jones and Byron Nelson each have very good first-person accounts of their playing days, that help you get 'inside the head' of a golf master.  Both of the books go into great detail.  They describe the author's line of reasoning and decision-making as they matured into better and better players - and persons...fantasically valuable stuff for you as you seek to continually improve.

Now that is a 'Right Question'...indeed a real SAQ!

I'll do my best now, to give you my 'Right Answer'.

Yesterday I went into great detail about discovering how I deceived myself in an everyday-type occurence.

By training yourself to habitually/consistently 'Open Your Eyes' in your Golf Game, you will develop HONESTY that will help your whole Golf Game become much more consistent.

My 11-Yr.-Old Son 'Beat' Me - From Same Tee Markers

   Welll, it finally happened.  Taylor 'beat' me, when playing from the same Tee-Markers.

   It happened last Tuesday.  I had a 'Play With the Pro' set-up with one of the St. Xavier boys I help.  Taylor asked if he could join us - and if the student could bring his little brother, who is a friend of Taylor.  I said 'ok'.

   Everything went fine, as normal.  We played the White/Middle Tee-Markers at Meadow Links & Golf Academy.

   One of the GolfPsych tenets is to really seek to 'not know what you're shooting', during the actual playing of your round.  It really does help ensure that you 'take one shot at a time'.

   I've grown to follow that concept better and better with each passing year.

   BUT, when Taylor eagled the 8th hole by knocking in his Gap Wedge from 'bout 80 yards...

   I confess, I was tempted to 'add up his score, in my mind'.

   I was real happy for him.  It was not until we sat down a few minutes later - in the Grill Area - that I realized (with his assistance) that he had shot even-par 31(E).  He had done that before...he has even shot 29(-2), from our Gold/Forward Tee-Markers.

   What he quickly pointed out to me, though, was that I had shot 33(+2).

   AND that it was the first time he had ever shot a lower score than me, while we played the same Tee-Markers.

   He actually first 'beat' me, about 5 years ago when he was around 6-yrs.-old.  But that was when he played from his "US KIDS TEES".  We played The Mill Course that day...he shot 36(E) and I shot 41 (+5).

   SO, you get the idea!!!

   I've always encouraged all of my Players to keep in mind, that in Golf...no one guards you!!!   AND you don't guard anyone else!!!

   It's not like a fellow-competitor can 'block your shot' or 'tackle' you, right?

   This is where the age-old adage comes from...."In golf, you only compete against the course and yourself".  Yourself and the course are your only two real competitors.

   I am just not saying a word about that to Taylor, for a while...let him have his fun, eh?

   Here's to geat 'Family Time' in our beloved Game!!!

Tiger or Annika: Who Enjoys It More?

   Had avery nice chat about some of these things with Mike Mathias, one of my Players...a West Point Grad and an Iraq I Veteran.

   It definitely, seems to me, Annika.

   Now, I want to make real clear...don't we all pretty much agree that Tiger is the best-ever?...if that's possible to even define?  (Though, believe it or not, Annika's stats say she might very well be 'better'.)  We, definitely, know who wins - on the 'flashy personality' scale.

   From my very distant perspective...I've never met Tiger...much less even know him.  I very briefly met Annika, though I've had a few very nice, quick chats with her Teacher, Pia Nilsson (a wonderful lady).

   Again, from very far away, to me, it simply seems Annika enjoys it more.  She repeatedly talks about competing against noone, only herself.  This, I think, has created an enormous amount of SELF-SATISFACTION - for her.

   Tiger, though, just has to beat Jack.  His satisfaction - though I'm sure he has an enormous amount of Self-Satisfaction - is largely dependent on his comparison to OTHERS, mainly Jack.

   I will definitely STOP right here, talking about them.  I find it very sad that total strangers say anything they want about public/famous figures - often very demeaning and personal words - when they have never even met the individual, much less have a friendship with them.  That's why I want to make sure that you don't see my words as critical toward these two very upstanding, hard-working people, Tiger and Annika, in any way shape or form.

   Now I want to talk about all the rest of us.  I love the fact that most of you are very happy golfers - due in large part - to your "Self-Satisfaction" aspirations.

   Trying to play good golf is hard enough - but made harder if we're doing it to please someone else beside our self.  

   Think about your 'Golf Happiness' level in '09...mainly in regards to this criteria...who are you trying to please.

   Might be the best thing you do for your Scores in 2009.

Woodland Golf Course: Vintage Golf...Dad

   My son, Taylor, and I played Woodland Golf Course today for the first time.

   ...An absolute treat.

   The kind, pleasant, understated lady, Pat, behind the counter - and - the very helpful and magnanimous Starter, Mr. Thomas...made it obvious to me why the parking lot was full.

   Sue Woodruff, an earnest student of mine, plays there frequently.  In the 1930's her family built - and owned - that course...subsequently, for many years.  I'm pretty sure Sue lived right there on the property. 

   My family (grandfather) was also building courses in the 30's (in Atlanta), just like Sue's family - here in Cincinnati. 

   For each of us, all of us - to walk the beautiful fairways that we have known for so many years - is simply an absolutely sublime joy.

   It got me to reflect and reminisce about my Dad...got kind of misty.  He died in '93; actually worked for a summer or two at Woodland.

   He played East Lake C.C. in Atlanta, some.  When I was a member at East Lake C.C. in 1978-79 - walking the same fairways Bobby Jones, my Dad and my Aunt had so often walked - it just made me content - to know that "I ain't the only one around here".  Many (golfers and otherwise) have "gone before" us. 

   Made me wonder if I'll see Dad in heaven - and get to tell him all the wonderful things about my wife and children - I have so missed, not getting to tell him about - here in this life.

   Here's to golf - and the serene, heartfelt emotions/thoughts/memories that even a, what some would call, very rudimentary course, can elicit...in us mortals - who only stay here for a very short while.
