Ryder Cup: Sportsmanship Supreme

To see the virtue and sportsmanship of all the Players and Captains of the Ryder Cup teams sure does make me proud of the 'Gentlemanly/Classy Nature' of our great game.

They compete with all their guts, yet say sincere 'Congratulations' when vanquished.

I simply say 'Congratulations' to both teams - and 'Thank You' for your class, which stands in such stark contrast to the attitudes and actions seen in other Professional Sports.

The considerate, honest and thoughtful spirit of all the great gentleman and ladies of our storied game lives on - in you all.

Golf On TV – How To Watch It This Week

 

Television Golf can help your Golf game.  I’m afraid, though, it usually does much more harm than good.

My family has watched the vast majority of tournaments over the last 10 years with no audio.

Try to remember that the commentators’ job is to keep you in suspense so you will stay tuned and increase their Nielsen ratings.  Their motivation increases the entertainment value for you – but it hurts your Golf Game.

They make every shot seem ‘critical’.  Each shot also becomes very...

British Open 'Applause' vs. American 'Moan'

   While you watch the British Open this weekend...Notice This.

   When a player hits a longish putt and it just misses, finishes near the hole...the gallery will  clap/applaud.  In America, the crowd just gives a 'moan' (you know...'ooooh' as the putt approaches, then 'aaaahhhh', when the putt misses).

   This difference reflects the difference in mindset of Americans,I feel.

   The 'ole Brits' and other Europeans wisely understand that a putt that ends up close to the hole, is often a good thing...there will be no need to worry about a 3-putt. 

   We Americans, on the other hand, tend to see the putt that finishes close to the hole as a bad thing...it didn't go in.

   Very interesting...you should decide which way you should look at it...for your own GOLF...SUCCESS.

   Enjoy the weekend telecasts of the oldest major...and learn a bunch to help your own game, especially by watching Tom Watson's equanimity and determination (while never throwing a childish temper tantrum)!!!

Kenny Perry: Missin' It Good

   If you saw Sunday's PGA Tour event - you know those last few holes were not the 'prettiest' holes ever televised.

   It "just shows to go ya'" as they say in the country.  It a'int 'how' - but 'how many'.  Even for the best Players in the world - and what we see on TV every weekend - are the best - great shots aren't neccessarily needed at every point of the round.

   Great Players and Teachers know - that a big part of GOLF...SUCCESS is learning how to 'miss it' properly.

   I refer to this concept often when I'm out on the Course with you in a Lesson.  I often will ask you to draw 'Concentric Circles' around the flagstick.  I will even do it on a pad of paper.  I will draw the shape of the green you are hitting into - and put the flagstick on that green diagram.

   I then draw 'Concentric Circles' around that flagstick - 10 ft. circles in interval.  Now you will understand much more clearly...that maybe 15 ft. right of the flag gives you an impossible pitch - and probably Bogey...while maybe 35 ft. left of the flag gives you a nice, boringly beautiful, 2-putt Par.

   'Miss it' well - and your scores will get lower, for sure.

   It sure helped Kenny - get another million dollars this past Sunday.

  

Ryder Cup Success...Very Mental!

   What a fantastic win for we Americans, eh?

   All those players played very well, in my way of looking at things.

   You can learn a great Mental Game lesson from what Paul Azinger said about mid-morning on Friday...

   Question: "What do you fear the most today, Paul?"

   Answer: "That my players may "get ahead" of themselves...that they don't just "stay in the moment"".

   So, the main thing Azinger wanted, all he really thought they needed...a simple "one shot at a time" mentality.

Be Careful...Don't THINK like the TV Commentators TALK!!!

   Congratulations Camillo on your win at East Lake G.C.!!!

   Were you really thinking you were out of it yesterday after your double on #6 and bogey on #7?

   The TV Commentators said you were thinking that.  How well did they do with their Mind-Reading?

   I'm guessing, from my home here in Cincinnati, they might've been wrong.  You, obviously know for sure.

   Golfers...here we see another lesson.  Don't you THINK like the TV Commentators TALK!!!

   The best players in the world...those with the best Mental Game...often are not doing a constant, "running commentary" on the "state" of their round.  They, most often, are "taking one shot at a time".

   This "running commentary", I'm afraid, though, goes on in the minds of most average players.  These players know exactly "how they stand" at all times.

   Such self-consciousness - almost always - proves detrimental.  It rarely helps your score.  Haven't you noticed...quite often your best rounds end, and you did not realize - until the end - how low your score really was.

   The benefit of this "one shot at a time" mentality comes, though, like any progress in golf - after much effort, practice and trial 'n error.  It is earned.

   ...definitely a rather strange dynamic...we have to consciously work at being un-self-conscious.

   I wish you well in this endeavour...it is worth it...and very enjoyable!!!

   I have a feeling Camillo has enjoyed that benefit - a lot lately.

   Well, well, well...so the Americans won the Ryder Cup.

   What do you think?

   Very strange, wasn't it...to see hours of TV with no mention, or thought, of Tiger?

   Man was it refreshing - to actually "get to know" some other players, in their own right - instead of having them constantly held up to the "standard" of Tiger Woods.

   Here's to the "personality" of golf - and each of its players.

   Keep playing great, Tiger.  We all love watching you, for sure.

   It's just also fun to watch other good players...who might be having fun, too!
